Honda 'Earth Dreams Technology' - Driver Stories

Honda 'Earth Dreams Technology' - Driver Stories

16 June 2014

Earth Dreams Technology is Honda's signature series of the latest in environmental technology. The Honda 1.6 i-DTEC engine, now fitted to the Civic, Civic and CR-V is the first of the Earth Dreams series to arrive in Ireland.

Since the introduction of Honda’s ‘Earth Dreams Technology’ 1.6 diesel back in early 2013, there have been many Irish drivers experiencing the economical and performance benefits of the technology in every day driving on real Irish roads. Many of these drivers have made contact with their local Dealers and with Honda to let us know just how well their vehicles are performing in the real world.

Here, we share the experiences of some of our customers who are now enjoying the benefits of Earth Dreams Technology.

Honda Civic owner John from Clare made headlines recently when he contacted the Irish Independent’s Motoring Editor Eddie Cunningham about the fuel economy returns from his new Civic.

Having taken delivery of his Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC Executive in April, John had been very impressed by the fuel returns from his new car. In his previous vehicle, a diesel-powered model from a well-known competitor, John was able to achieve an average of 50mpg in every day driving. On trading up to a Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC, this average economy has now improved to a much more impressive 68mpg, saving considerable fuel over the course of a year.

When contacting the Irish Independent, John wrote, ‘I have been monitoring mpg figures for years and I have never encountered a car that performed to that stated in the publicity brochure – that is until last week. Three weeks ago I took delivery of a new Honda Civic Executive 1.6 diesel. Honda claim a combined 78.5mpg. Last Saturday I drove from Clare to a wedding in Roscommon. I set the cruise control to the appropriate speed limited for the journey – 120/100/80. Eco mode was selected. By the time I reached Roscommon I had a return of 75mpg.’

John followed up a week later with a further update on an improved result from his Civic on a similar to trip to another family occasion. He wrote, ‘Just after arriving in Roscommon. I zeroed the trip computer in Shannon this morning. The difference from last Saturday is that I set cruise control at 100km/h for the 100 & 120 zone & 80 for the 80 zone and the fuel tank was half full. That said there was lots of standing water on secondary roads. It is an unbelievable return - 83.6 mpg - hence the photo. The 67.6 represents a combination of long/short trips.’

John was recently invited to Honda HQ in Citywest, Dublin in order to take an official Honda Challenge test drive in his vehicle and see how low he could go with his fuel economy in our Challenge. On a timed and mapped Challenge route, taking in twisty back roads, open dual-carriageways and much in between, John used his eco driving skills, along with the technology in his Civic, to achieve a deeply impressive 3.3 l/100km, the equivalent of 85.6mpg.

Kate from Co. Louth, Driver of a Civic 1.6 i-DTEC

Kate from Louth collected her new Honda Civic back in 2013, trading in a small petrol hatchback for the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC diesel.

Since purchasing the car, in over 20,000km of driving, Kate’s average fuel consumption in her Civic is 4.1l/100km, the equivalent of 68.9mpg.

Kate estimates that her fuel bills have been cut in half by trading up to the Civic with Earth Dreams Technology. In her previous vehicle, to fill the tank cost roughly €60 and lasted for about 7 days. Now, in her New Civic, to fill the tank costs roughly the same, and yet this €60 fill now lasts up to 2 weeks – saving €30 per week.
