Axa Assistance undertake the Honda Challenge

Axa Assistance undertake the Honda Challenge

17 February 2014

The team at AXA  Assistance in Athlone, Co. Westmeath have become the first company in Ireland to prove their Eco-Driving skills in the Honda Challenge, with a remarkable winning score of 3.3 l/100km or 86mpg.

The Honda Challenge is a new initiative for companies to learn the benefits of driving efficiently, while also taking part in a team building competition. The goal is to achieve the lowest fuel consumption over a test route in the new Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC diesel. The route is planned to take in urban areas, fast main roads and suburban streets to test real-world economy on real Irish roads, under real driving conditions.

Each team is given a brief overview of the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC, the first car in Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology series, and the eco-efficiency technologies within the car are all explained, such as the Eco Assist system, Idle Stop, Cruise Control and Shift Indicator Light. Tips on how to drive more efficiently are also discussed. Each team then appoints a navigator and driver, and together they must follow the route within a specified time, all the while using the many fuel efficiency technologies in the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC to achieve the lowest consumption possible.

The AXA  Assistance team achieved an average of 3.8 l/100km, or 75mpg, across all teams, with the winning team of Paul Kelly and Breda Arru  taking the top spot with 3.3 l/100km, the equivalent of 86mpg.

Eoin Lyons, Managing Director of AXA Assistance commented, ‘At AXA Assistance, we work with Irish Drivers every day. When the chance to partake in the Honda Challenge came up we were very happy to participate and learn more about eco driving. What was primarily a fun event for all of our team, also gave us some very useful tips on how to get the best from our own cars. The figures we achieved in the Civic 1.6 i-DTEC were remarkable, our team averaged almost 75mpg, while we were delighted to set such a high score with 86mpg from our winning pair.

Commenting on the event, Adrian Cole, Managing Director of Universal Honda Ltd. said, ‘The Honda Challenge came about after many of our own team began to compare their fuel economy in our new Civic 1.6 i-DTEC. As the achievements became more and more impressive, we organised a competition to seek the best efficiency over a set course. The results were astonishing, and it proved great fun for all involved. We were very happy to then have AXA Assistance join in the Challenge. We have a very strong  relationship with AXA  Assistance  as our roadside assistance partner, and I am very pleased to see how well the Civic performed during what was a very enjoyable event for all involved.’
